What is Internal Family Systems?

Transformative psychotherapy… and empowering paradigm.

Internal Family Systems is a powerfully transformative, evidence-based model of psychotherapy. We believe the mind is naturally multiple and that is a good thing.  Our inner parts contain valuable qualities and our core Self knows how to heal, allowing us to become integrated and whole. In IFS all parts are welcome.

IFS is a movement. A new, empowering paradigm for understanding and harmonizing the mind and, thereby, larger human systems. One that can help people heal and helps the world become a more compassionate place.

IFS Institute welcomes all people of any age, race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, class, ability, language or cultural background into the Internal Family Systems community. You are welcome here, and all of your parts are welcome too. Learn more about our Individual and Organizational IFS Training Scholarship opportunities which support our quest to expand diversity and inclusivity in our community.

The mission of IFS Institute is to bring more Self leadership to the world.

Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Dear all,

As we sat down to write this note to the IFS community about our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I) efforts, we recognized that while we have launched important projects and made progress, we also wanted to take a step back and create a statement of commitment. We wanted to be specific about our goals going forward, focus our efforts and be transparent and accountable to the community.

Trauma and the Internal Family Systems Model: Releasing Personal and Legacy Burdens

Schedule

Friday, March 18, 2022: 10:00 am to 5:30 pm EST

Saturday: March 19, 2022 - 10:00 am to 5:45 pm EST

This presentation will provide a brief review of the basics of the IFS model by Richard Schwartz, PhD, who developed the model, then will focus in detail on its use with attachment injuries and trauma related presenting problems. IFS is a non-pathologizing, hopeful framework within which to practice psychotherapy certified as an evidence-based practice by SAMHSA. IFS offers both a conceptual umbrella under which a variety of practices and different approaches can be grounded and guided, and a set of original techniques for creating safety and fostering Self-to-Self connection in individuals, couples, and families. The model posits that people have a core Self that is unharmed by traumatic events. The path to healing in the IFS model is to facilitate a process that releases constraints to people living a life that is led by their core Self rather than from aspects of themselves, called parts, that act from reactive and defensive stances, causing further problems in an effort to help or protect.

Testimonials

IFS has been the single most influential model by which I view the world, my interactions with others and myself.  It is more than a model for professionals in the mental health field. It is a model that facilitates one's personal growth and is intuitive and easily accessible.  It is applicable and versatile for a myriad of contexts including corporate teams and school classrooms.

Ellyn, Chicago IL

Great insight is developing my own ability to have presence and help my coaching clients do the same - plus opportunity to connect to a unique, warm, and supportive community.
